My Family

A few years back my Dad worked on our family tree and managed to source these photographs. I completely forgot we had them. I love looking at them.

First Photograph- Edwin and Sarah Hawkins, taken around 1900. My Great Great Great Grandparents.

Second and Third Photograph- Lucy and Frederick Hawkins, and in the second photograph, my Great Grandfather Archie as a young boy.

We used to call him Coppy. It's what my Dad named him when was young because he couldn't manage to say his real name. Coppy used to give us 50p pocket money and Pear Drops, then we would play with his Rubix cube or on his stair lift until we got told off. Fun times.

I came across an interview of fashion photographer Tim Walker through Nick Knight's SHOWstudio website. I never realised that as well as collaborating with set designer Shona Heath, he works with set designer Andy Hillman- who graduated from The Arts Institute Bournemouth too.

Bonjour Paris

I have just returned from a university trip to Paris- mainly to gain inspiration, and to visit fashion trade show Premier Vision. It was TRES froid but tres fun.

Design Philosophy // Final Major Project

The basis of my final major project concept will be through the idea of 'personal space equals personal style'- A person's identity is depicted through the interior of their bedroom.

I will create a lifestyle brand and design products with inspiration drawn out from my personal design philosophy (my bedroom).

Company Illustration

An illustration of Company editor Victoria White, for a competition to win freelance work experience with them. I used a mixed media of gouache, pastel, ink and pencil. Freelance illustration is a job that I had never really thought about, maybe it's because the thought of doing my own taxes does not appeal, but I shall consider after this. 

Happy Pills

My housemate recently went travelling around Europe and told me about a shop she came across. Happy Pills is a 'pharmacy' concept sweet shop. They use signature fluorescent pink cross logo and lower case type. The idea is that customers pick 'n' mix their sweets and place them inside clear glass medicine bottles.

It has recognized that sweets are fun and sugar makes you feel good/better, and linked it with medicine and pills.

Fabric + Type

Just a play around with cut out type in floral cotton fabric. I photographed each letter separately on my wooden floor then placed them together in Photoshop. I like the contrast in lighting and markings of the wood on the flooring.

Project Visuals

Here are a series of ideas of different ways I could communicate clothing for my look book, using a 'Pharmacy/Medical' concept. All three ideas clearly depict the clothing in a fun yet informational way.

The top image would be created using a photographic image (a styled model) and the bottom image is cut out photographs of clothing placed inside a medicine bottle.

Look Book

An inspiring look book from American clothing company, Insight. They have used a cut out/collage technique onto traditional painted landscapes. I like the mixture of art and photography- the real and impressionist.

In the second image I have played around with positive and negative space and cut-out clothing to help me develop within my project.

Ornate Birds

For my friend's 21st birthday present she asked me for a drawing of Sparrows. Using black ink and water, I drew two Sparrows sat on the branch of a tree, and framed it in an ornate black 6x4 frame from Paperchase. I love it.. and may do one for myself.

Major Project Preparation

Focusing on brand image, communication and promotion, I have organised a live brief to design an Autumn/Winter 2009 look book for Bournemouth individual fashion boutique 'The Pharmacy'. A new store is opening mid November and I will be producing a look book to promote the store and the brands stocked within the store.

Paying attention to the target market, I will design a unique in-store booklet, incorporating aspects of the store's existing concept and develop on visuals to apply to the look book.
